Cervical hernias: non-surgical and surgical treatment
A large proportion of protrusions and small cervical disc herniations will not require surgical treatment at any time. Directed and controlled exercises and good postural balance will help this to be the case. However, there are cases where the cervical herniation may compress neurological structures (nerves or spinal cord) and decompression surgery may be necessary. Spinal cord compression can produce a phenomenon known as Lhermitte's signs, which consists of a cramping sensation when flexing the neck that runs all the way down the back, even into the legs. This sensation may be physiological, however, its frequent presence should lead to tests to assess whether or not there is such neurological involvement.
